Arthur Homestead | 2021

Arthur Street, Hāwera

This modern, high-spec family home sits in a rural setting on the edge of Hāwera. Centred around a grand entranceway, the long, low form stretches out to a gabled wing at each end. We built it on a single level, with bedrooms and garaging at one end and the living spaces at the other.

Hermpac cedar vertical shiplap covers the gable ends and the entry porch. Its warm stain sits against white walls and a dark roof. We kept the palette simple so the cedar stands out.

The ceilings rise in the living wing. Raking ceilings run the length of the kitchen, dining and lounge, which gives the open-plan space plenty of height. Hawera Kitchens' joinery sets the tone in here, with dark woodgrain below, white above, and open timber boxes that turn the overheads into display shelving. A strip of glazing replaces the splashback along the back bench, making the kitchen and scullery feel open and light, connecting the space to the outdoors.

The house was designed around family life and entertaining friends and family. The kitchen, dining and lounge work as one space, so whoever is cooking stays part of the conversation. The scullery keeps the clean-up out of sight when there's a crowd. A barn-style sliding door off the living area closes off the kids' space, so toys and noise can be shut away at the end of the day.

The result is a practical family home with a strong street presence, built to handle everyday life as well as a full house.
